LANDSCAPE & COMMISSIONED PHOTOGRAPHY

Jan’s North Wales Trip

Here’s a rough video outlining how to use layer masks to select individual elements from different exposures and blend them together into a final composite. I’ve put it on YouTube as an unlisted video, so it won’t appear on my channel catalogue, but you can share the URL to anybody else who you think might find it useful šŸ˜ŠšŸ‘

Friday in the mountains:

1: Quick Smartphone & Handhelds stop
Where we first stopped very briefly to take advantage of the light.
2: Looking across to Ogwen Falls & Cwm Idwal
This is where we were in and out of the car to avoid the rain and first got the tripod out.
3: Ogwen Cottage
Where we stopped briefly but there was no long-term parking available. This is where you would park up to visit Cwm Idwal.
4: Llyn Ogwen
This is where you were shooting across the lake to the mountain where is the splashes of light moving across.
5: Llynnau Mymbyr
This is where we walked down to the lakeside with the howling gale blowing spray over the camera!
6: Snowdon horseshoe viewpoint
The layby where we spent quite some time shooting the moody cloud across the curve of Snowdon and the surrounding ridges.
7: Nant Perris
The layby right next to the mountain stream.
8: Snowdon Viewpoint
The pulling with the panoramic views, where the light wasn’t working for us this time.
9: Llyn Gwynant
The roadside pull in right alongside the lake where I made the misty video with Darren.
10: Watkin Path Parking
This is the little car park we used to walk up the Snowdon Watkin Path
11: Watkin Path
The point at which we stopped to shoot the Watkin Falls, before turning back.
12: Dolbadarn Castle
Down in Llanberis village where we parked up for the castle, and from where you would head up into the quarry.

Saturday morning along the north coast:

1: Penmon
Not much else to say about this really!
2: Red Wharf Bay
The long stretch of sand where we popped down to the seafront in the village of Benllech.
3: Traeth Dulas

This is the parking for where the derelict boats are lying in the tidal estuary.

VIDEO

4: Porth Wen

This is the parking for the derelict brickworks, right on the coast.

5: Cemaes Bay

The little village with the scenic harbour.

Saturday afternoon along the south coast:

1: Rhosneigr
This is where we stopped off and looked north west along the beach with the many rocky outcrops along its length. With several easy parking locations.
2: Aberffraw
This is where we stopped off for lunch, I’ve included it because you’ll see from the map it gives you access across the dunes to the beach with rocky headlands at either end and is well worth a visit in just about any conditions.
3: Church In The Sea
We didn’t visit because of the low tide, but I thought you might find it helpful to have it marked up if you’re planning a shoot there.

I’ve also included a video link, from when I made the image which did well in LPOTY:

You’ll see what I mean about the colour version being rather washed out

Here’s the final edit:

4: Llanddwyn Island
As with Penmon, not really much more to say about this spot!
Iā€™m often asked about the equipment I use.

You'll find details of most of it on my Ā GEAR PAGE
