The White Arch, Rhoscolyn, Anglesey

Best at / for: sunset, stormy seas.

Best avoided: sunrise – deep shadows.

Parking: free parking with close access to the location.

Access: an easy walk of about 15 minutes from nearest parking.

Notes: lovely cliff-top coastal walks and Gwenfaen’s Pillar is nearby.

Details:

The White Arch is an interesting subject in most conditions. With the exception of any time around sunrise. Throughout the year it is always in deep shadow early in the day.

It’s south-west facing, so projected light from a colourful sunset can make all the difference on the white background of the rock. But because the only vantage point to photograph it is from the south, you can only get an actual sunset in your frame during high summer.

It can also be quite dramatic at other times of the year when there is a strong swell and the waves a breaking on it at high tide.

Parking is very easy at the nearby St Gwenfaen’s Church, and the arch is only about fifteen minutes walk west of there along public footpaths clearly marked on OS maps.
