LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATION GUIDES:
Carmel Head
SUMMARY:
Best at / for: mid-summer sunset / sunrise.
Best avoided: mid-winter is bleak and light direction is poor.
Parking: free parking at Cemlyn Bay.
Access: easy walking along the coastline about 3 miles.
Notes: very scenic, isolated and often deserted.
Details:
This is one of my favourite off the beaten track locations on Anglesey. The closest parking is at least 3 miles away, and the area is really only ever occupied by coastal hikers. It is a rocky headland, Peppered with outcrops and small inlets. There are also some high cliff tops, and the entire area has great views across to the Skerries lighthouse.
Reaching in Carmel head is not difficult, because the Anglesey coastal path is well marked and does not require traversing any difficult terrain. The whole area, however, is part of the Mynachdy private estate and is not accessible during winter. Make sure you check the local signs for details.
For the landscape photographer, this entire area offers scope for everything from sweeping coastal landscapes right down to fine detail in the rocks and plants of this superb headland.
