Y Foel Goch, Capel Curig
SUMMARY:
Best at / for: sunrise and sunset – panoramic views across the region.
Best avoided: during and after long periods of wet weather, as the route is very boggy.
Parking: free parking behind Joe Brown’s outdoors shop.
Access: long hike, but no scrambling necessary, about 3 hours to summit.
Notes: Superb views across Snowdonia, The Glyders & Carneddau.
Details:
Situated to the north west of the village, it’s a long hike up from the A5 at Capel Curig to the summit. The walk can be very boggy in places and it’s not recommended after periods of heavy rainfall as it can be difficult to cross the large wet areas of terrain.
Y Foel Goch is just over 800m high, and its location gives great views across all the main ridge lines of the area. It’s a good location for sunrise and sunset images from the summit and is also an excellent wild-camp location with water sources close by.
This location also gives you excellent panoramas across the Moel Siabod and the Moelwynion, and the Snowdon Horseshoe.
It’s not a particularly technical route to reach the summit, but is rather a long drawn out hike. However, it is highly recommended for landscape photographers who enjoy wild camping and put you in an excellent location for great composition is all around you.
